As the home of one of the nation's finest park systems, the city is awash in water. There are thirteen lakes and marshes in the city as well as the Mississippi River, streams, and waterfalls, all of which are linked by parkways that form part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. Between Chicago and Seattle, the city and surrounding area has the greatest population and serves as the main economic hub for the region. Minneapolis is home to the Guthrie Theater and the First Avenue nightclub, which serve as anchors for the city's vibrant music and performing arts communities. The city served as a launching pad for some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan and Prince, which reflects the region's reputation as a hub of folk, funk, and alternative rock. Musicians Lizzo, Brother Ali, Atmosphere, and Dessa came from the hip-hop and rap scenes.

During the month of May 2020, the Minneapolis Police Department's Derek Chauvin, a white officer, shot and killed George Floyd, a black man, in the city.
