Cal Currier (born December 1, 2005) is an American sailor who is most notable for his solo 3,800 nautical mile Atlantic Ocean crossing in July 2022. Currier, who was 16 years old at the time, is believed to be the youngest individual to make this crossing, from West to East, alone.[1] As a result of his voyage, Currier was awarded the 2022 Young Voyager Award from the Cruising Club of America and the 2022 Jester Award from the Ocean Cruising Club.[2][3]

Early life

Callum Boone Saltonstall Currier ("Cal") was born on December 1, 2005 in San Francisco, CA to parents Katrina and James Currier. He was raised in Palo Alto, CA with his three brothers and attended Palo Alto High School as a member of the class of 2024.[4]

Voyage and publicity

Preparation

In February 2022 Currier began taking sailing lessons at Spinnaker Sailing (Redwood City) in preparation for his voyage. He was primarily supported by three ocean sailors: his father James Currier, his grandfather Bill Saltonstall, and the previous owner of his boat, Sandy Van Zandt.[1]

Boat

Currier made the journey in a 1976 Tartan 30 he named Argo.[5] The boat was purchased from Van Zandt in February 2022.

Journey

On June 27, 2022, Argo left Marion Harbor in the late morning. After 19 days, Currier reached the Azores and stopped for 24 hours to refuel. Eight days later, he arrived in Lagos, Portugal. The voyage was a west to east crossing of the north Atlantic and took 28 days total.[1]

Orca incident: 2023

The following summer, in 2023, Currier and two of his family members were sailing down the western coast of Spain and were attacked by orca whales.[6] This attack was one of many that have occurred in that region. The orcas damaged the rudder of Currier's Tartan 30 and the family was towed to safety by a rescue vessel.[7] Shortly after, the family sold the boat in the port of Barbate, Spain where they had been towed.[8]

Awards

  • Young Voyager Award from the Cruising Club of America.[9]
  • Jester Award from the Ocean Cruising Club[10]
