Brijeshwari Kumari Gohil (born 16th October 1994) is the Princess of the royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat, India[1].

Family

The kingdom of Bhavnagar was founded in 1723 by Maharaja Bhavsinhji-I of Bhavnagar. The Gohil dynasty moved from the fortified town of Sihor, Gujarat to Bhavnagar. The capitol flourished under the rulers with the creation of several trade routes. The Bhavnagar port continues to support a large population of the city with Alang.[2] Bhavnagar has been ruled by several notable rulers who are still fondly remembered and spoken of. Maharaja Takhatsinhji of Bhavnagar was responsible for several town planning and economic reforms. Hospitals that are still functional in Bhavnagar such as Sir Takhatsinhji Hospital were built with his vision and foresight. Maharaja Takhatsinhji was also a patron of the arts. He was often seen at Bombay Art Society, distributing prizes and supporting upcoming artists. The famous Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma also visited Bhavnagar during his reign and created a number of paintings for the royal family. Brijeshwari's great grandfather Maharaja Krishna Kumar Singhji[3] was the first ruler of India to hand over his Kingdom to Democratic India. He then went on to serving as the Governor of Madras (now Chennai). She is the daughter of Maharaja Vijayraj Singh Gohil and Maharani Samyukta Kumari Gohil. The family run their palace, Nilambag Palace[4] as a heritage hotel. They also run several education and welfare Trusts in Bhavnagar.

Education and Career

Brijeshwari completed her education in Mumbai at Jamnabai Narsee School and Ecole Mondiale World School. She then went on to pursuing her BA Joint Honours in Archeology and History of Art from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Upon graduating in 2015 she joined the Piramal Art Foundation[5], Mumbai which is run by the Piramal Group. While continuing her work at Piramal she went back to the United Kingdom to complete her Masters in Heritage Conservation and Management from Durham University, United Kingdom. Over the years she has worked at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangralaya and UNESCO in Lumbini, Nepal. She is presently working as Vice President and Curator at the auction house Prinseps in Mumbai[6]. Brijeshwari spends half her time in Bhavnagar, running Bhavnagar Heritage. A brand focusing on preservation and protection of the regions heritage. She is also restoring her ancestral home[7] and serving as the Convenor for the INTACH Bhavnagar Chapter.
