Bridget Degnen is an American politician serving as the Cook County Commissioner for the Cook County Board of Commissioners 12th district. The district contains many neighborhoods in Chicago, including parts of the Loop, Six Corners, Portage Park, Jefferson Park, Albany Park, Mayfair, Independence Park, Lakeview, North Center, Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square, Magnificent Mile, River North, Old Irving Park, Ravenswood, Streeterville, Roscoe Village, Bucktown, Wicker Park, River West, Noble Square, Old Town, Horner Park, North Park, and North Center. She defeated the incumbent in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2018, and won the general election unopposed on November 6, 2018.[1]

Early Life and education

Degnen was born and raised in the Edgebrook neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side.[2] She graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in environmental engineering. After graduating, Degnen served in the United States Peace Corp in Mali, West Africa. She later graduated from Loyola University School of Law.[3]

Career

After graduating from Loyola University School of Law, Degnen practiced law.[1] Starting in 2013, Degnen was the Deputy General Counsel of the Illinois Department of Public Health.[4] She then served as the Deputy Director of Medical Cannabis where she regulated medical cannabis dispensaries licensed under the Illinois Medical Cannabis Program.[5]

Cook County Commissioner (2018–present)

Degnen defeat incumbent John Fritchey in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2018 with 55% of the vote.[6] She went on to run unopposed in the general election on November 6, 2018.[1] Degnen was sworn in as the Cook County Commissioner for the 12th District on December 3, 2018. She also serves as the chair of the environment and sustainability committee for the Cook County Forest Preserve.[7]

In 2019, Degnen started the Cook County Environmental Commissioner.[8]

Personal life

Degned is married to Mark Degnen and has one child.[2]
