Bowens – The Builders Choice , privately owned by Bowens & Pomeroy, is an Australian business supplying Building material across Victoria (Australia). It was ranked 143 in the Australian Financial Review Top 500 Private Companies in 2018 with an annual revenue of $413 million[1].

Established in 1894 in Melbourne, Australia, the company initially focussed on the supply of Timber (disambiguation). However, Bowens quickly expanded into the retail sector offering hardware and building materials for Builder and the Handyman[2].

Bowens employs approximately 500 people and operates 16 branches[3] across Victoria, Australia, supplying more than 30,000 products.

History

In 1894 Richard Bowen and Redmond Pomeroy began selling timber products from a small timber yard in North Melbourne under the name Bowen & Pomeroy, Timber Merchants[2].

In 1924 both Richard Bowen (aged 59) and Redmond Pomeroy (aged 66) tragically passed. Charles Barrass filled the role of manager until John Bowen became managing director in 1931[4].

In 2005 Jack Bowen took a step back and handed over the reins to his eldest son, John Bowen. By 2008, Bowens had employed over 500 staff, including 35 external sales representatives, 12 trading branches, two pre-fabrication sites, and sold over 28,000 product lines[4].

In August 2011 Bowens acquired TimberTruss, Australia’s leading Prefabrication and Modular building manufacturer[5].

Additional Services

Bowens offers the in-store hire of onsite Portable toilet, Temporary fencing, Timber Crossing and Power Poles[6]
