Bill Liu (刘自鸿; born 1983) is a Chinese entrepreneur based in Shenzhen.[1] He is the founder, and CEO of Royole Corporation, a manufacturer of fully flexible displays and sensors that can be used in a range of human-machine interface products, including TV screens, smartphones and smart tablets.[2][3]

Early Life

Liu obtained B.S./M.S. degrees with honours in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University in 2004 and 2006.[4] He went on to study electrical engineering at Stanford University, and received a Ph.D. from the university in 2009.[5]

In 2012, he founded Royole Corporation in Shenzhen with two other graduates and friends from Stanford University.[6] Liu founded Royole with the mission to transform the way people experience and interact with the world, unveiling the world's thinnest flexible display in 2014.[7][8]

Royole Corporation

Royole introduced the world's thinnest 0.01 mm fully flexible display in 2014 under Liu's leadership.[9] In 2018, Royole commenced the volume production of fully flexible displays from its $1.7B production campus in Shenzhen,[10] representing a change in the industry from the norm of flat screens to curved displays.[11]

Directing and searching for new applications of Royole’s flexible technology, Liu led the creation and launch of the FlexPai in 2018,[12] the world’s first foldable smartphone with flexible display brought to market and symbolising an evolution of the mobile phone industry.[13][14]

In 2020, Bill Liu was invited as one of the four plenary speakers at the CLEO Conference, speaking to over 10,000 virtual attendees on how fully flexible displays represent the next generation of the human machine interface (HMI).[15]
