About

Big Help Project is a NGO non-profit registered with the Charity Commission[1] in the United Kingdom, founded in 2011 as Knowsley Foodbank [2]. The non-profit is now run by Peter Mitchell, who is also the councillor for the Croxteth Ward in Liverpool City Council. The charity has goals to break the cycle of poverty,[3] as well as aiding those impacted by the housing crisis. [4]

In 2016, the charity opened a funiture and white-goods store, for the poorer regions of Merseyside .[5] The purpose of the store is to offer people the opportunity to purchase a wide range of household products at competitive interest rates, whilst also being an outlet for Community RePaint, retailing recycled paint to suit all budgets.[6] The store was featured on an episode of BBC's Inside Out North West.[7] In 2019, one of Big Help Project's charity shops was broken into, in which food and cash was stolen. CEO Peter Mitchell then told the BBC, "If someone had needed help, if someone had needed food and support we'd have given them it."[8]

In the same year, Big Help Project gifted 250 festive food packs in partnership with COLBALT housing.[9]

The charity fronts the Baby Basics scheme in Knowsley as part of the national Baby basics network. Providing mums-to-be with essentials for their baby, including clothes, bedding and toiletries.[10]

Big Help Project campaigned against the Mersey gateway bridge in 2019. The charity suggested that vulnerable families were falling into debt and being forced to use foodbanks as result of the fines they had incurred. Charity CEO Peter Mitchell suggested the toll company Merseyflow should be "ashamed" of the misery they inflicted on the region's most vulnerable.[11]

In 2020, the Liverpool Echo recognise the charity as a “pillar of the community” really making a change in the local community.[12] and was also listed amongst Knowsley’s community heroes bringing hope throughout the pandemic.[13] Coordinating food support for 77,000 people in 2020/21.[14]

In 2021, Big Help Project marked its 10 year anniversary with key supporters, when they held the first Patron’s Lunch at Knowsley Hall.[15] With Guest of Honour Mr Mark Blundell DL, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside. The event was also attended by Big Help Project’s Patrons, Edward Stanley, and Stephen Twigg, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

In July 2022, Wigan Athletic announced that their parent company Europa Point Investment Corporation (EPIC) was gifting the front of shirt sponsorship to Big Help Project for the 2022/2023 season.[16] In 2022, The Drive a partner under the Big Help Group received BBC Children in Need funding to set up a 'safe space' following the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel. A community hub close to where Olivia was killed giving local children affected by the shooting a safe space to socialise.[17]
