Benjamin McLean (born 26 December 1981) is a retired British Modern pentathlon and sports lawyer. He is an associate vice president and senior associate counsel for the National Basketball Association (EMEA).
Education
McLean holds a degree in Law from Cardiff University, graduating in 2011. He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from BPP Law School.
Career
Athletic career
McLean has a background as a professional athlete, having competed for Pentathlon in Great Britain. He represented Great Britain from 1996 - 2008, competing in various World Cups, European Championships and World Championships.[1] McLean's highest placing in international competition was 7th in the 2005 World Cup Final in Uppsala, Sweden,[2] one place behind double Olympic champion Andrey Moiseyev. McLean was an accomplished swimmer and runner, but notably weaker in the other events.
After failing to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics,[3] McLean retired as a modern pentathlete and trained as a sports lawyer.
Legal career
McLean currently serves as the Associate Vice President and Senior Associate Counsel for the National Basketball Association (EMEA). In this role, he oversees legal operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, providing strategic advice and managing complex legal matters. Prior to this, he served as Senior Director and Associate Counsel for the NBA (EMEA) from 2022 to 2023, and as Director and Associate Counsel from 2018 to 2021.[4]
Before joining the NBA, McLean worked as Corporate Counsel for Pentland Brands, handling legal responsibilities for major brands like Speedo, Mitre Sports, and JD Sports, and providing counsel on brand management and international business.
He has also served as a solicitor at Stephens & Associates Ltd, focusing on commercial law with clients in the sports and fashion sectors, including Reebok and Dermalogica. McLean also assisted the legal team at adidas with contractual and regulatory matters.
