Bendahara Sakam (awi: بنداهارا سكام), also spelled as Bendahara Saqkam, was a notable historical figure with a significant role in the history of Brunei and the broader region during the late 16th century. He is renowned for his contributions and leadership during a tumultuous period in Brunei's history.
Background and lineage
Bendahara Sakam was the son of Sultan Abdul Kahar of Brunei and was descended from prominent lineages, including Datu Lakandula, Raja Sulaiman, and Raja Matanda of Manila [1]. His royal lineage undoubtedly played a significant role in his involvement in various historical events.
Support for Sultan Saiful Rijal
One of Bendahara Sakam's notable actions was his assistance to Sultan Saiful Rijal in reclaiming his throne. The circumstances and details of this event may vary in historical records, but it is clear that Bendahara Sakam played a crucial role in supporting Sultan Saiful Rijal's bid for the throne.
Repelling the Spanish Attack
Bendahara Sakam's historical significance extends to his involvement in repelling the Spanish attack on Brunei during the Castilian War of 1578, in collaboration with Orang Kaya Tiger Padang and a contingent of 100 warriors[2]. This event marked a critical juncture in Brunei's history, as it faced external threats from European colonial powers. Bendahara Sakam's leadership, strategic acumen, and his collaborative defense effort demonstrated his dedication to safeguarding his homeland. Additionally, for preparation for the Castilian War of 1578, they made fortifications in Kampong Pintu Malim and named it "Pulau Ambok"[3][4][5].
