Lebanon's capital and biggest city, Beirut, is the country's administrative centre. According to the most recent census, Greater Beirut has a population of 2.2 million people, making it the third-largest metropolis in the Levant. The city is located on a peninsula in the middle of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, making it a popular tourist destination. Because Beirut has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years, and because it was once one of Phoenicia's most important city states, it is considered to be one of the world's oldest cities. The Amarna letters from the New Kingdom of Egypt, which date back to the 15th century BC, include the first known historical mention to Beirut.

Beirut is the capital of Lebanon and serves as the country's administrative centre. The city is also a major economic hub, with numerous banks and companies headquartered there. According to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, Beirut is an important seaport for the nation and the region, and it has been classified as a Beta + World City. The Lebanese Civil War left a devastating toll on Beirut, and the city's cultural environment has undergone extensive rebuilding.
