Barry Squire is a visual artist and musician from Whangārei, New Zealand. Squire has been an active contributor to the art and music scene in Northland since the early 1990s.[1] He explores the human condition through the medium of paint, and is experienced in lithography and sculpture making. [1]. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions within New Zealand, [2] [3] as well having work selected for the international travelling exhibition The New Faces of Christ 2000. [4]
He creates experimental music focusing on ambient sound, percussion, drums and poetry, and collaborative performances such as the 2022 performance Chaos/Lament/Wail with band The Dirty Little Runts in the Corner.[5]
Squire, alongside wife Megan Squire, own Hangar Art and Framing, an art gallery and framing service, which they opened in 2006.[6] Hangar Art and Framing hosts a variety of exhibitions with local and internationally recognsised painters, printmakers, craftspeople, jewelers, potters, musicians, sculptors and glass-makers. Squire is a trained craftsman builder[8] and also spent a period in the late 1980s training as a professional single scull rower. He raced in the New Zealand representative crew in the 1988 Under 23 Trans Tasman Regatta in Adelaide, Australia, where he placed 5th in the Men's Single Scull Series 1 race and 4th in the Men's Single Scull series 3 race. [9] Squire then went on to coach Whangārei Rowing Club's Girls Rowing Crew from 2012-2014.[10] [11]
