Barbara J. Ryan is most well-known as an advocate and changemaker for open-data policies regarding Earth Observation data. Ryan currently serves as the Executive Director of the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC). [1] She has held many leadership positions throughout her career including serving as Secretariat of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) where she concentrated on Earth Observation data integration in order to gain insight on socio-ecological systems. These insights guide decisions in a variety of areas including agriculture, disaster planning, biodiversity, energy, and public health. [2] She also served as director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s Space Program, a group that focuses on applications of Earth Observation to aid the members of WMO. [3] Additionally, driven by Ryan’s leadership as the Associate Director for the USGS, an open-data policy was adopted for all Landsat satellite series data. Specifically, current and future Landsat data were made globally available for free to the end-user. The open Landsat data policy expanded applications and research in Earth Observation in many arenas throughout the world. [4]
