Advocacy

Autos Drive America advocates for open trade policies to expand access to global markets to export American-made vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Tax Credit

In 2021, Autos Drive America opposed a measure in the Build Back Better Act (BBB) that incentivized purchases from auto manufacturing workers represented by a labor union.[1] At the time, the United States offered consumers an Electric Vehicle (EV) Tax Credit on new electric vehicles purchased after 2009 worth between $2,500 and $7,500, depending on each vehicle's traction battery capacity and the gross vehicle weight rating.[2]

Under the BBB, consumers who purchased new electric vehicles produced in union-represented plants would have been eligible to receive up to $4,500 in additional federal tax credits.[3] Autos Drive America argued that this tax credit discriminated against non-unionized workers and could reduce consumer choice, launching an advertising and lobbying campaign against the proposal. Ultimately, the proposed EV tax credit failed alongside the BBB proposal.[4]

In 2022, an electric vehicle tax credit was revived as part of the Inflation Reduction Act.[5]

Autos Drive America expressed concern about the sourcing requirements included in the legislation, arguing it could constrain electric vehicle production and hinder consumer adoption.

On August 16th, 2022, the new requirements for the EV tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act were signed into law by President Joe Biden.[6]

Semiconductor Shortage

In 2022, Autos Drive America supported the CHIPS and Science Act, legislation meant to incentivize and strengthen the American production of semiconductor chips. In August of 2022, President Biden signed the $280 billion bipartisan bill into law.[7]
