Athletics Essendon is a Track & Field and Cross Country club located in Melbourne, Australia.[1] The club has had representatives at the last 16 Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games, including three representatives at the 2020 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympic.[2][3][4] The club has had a number of athletes compete across a range of other notable competitions including; World Athletics Championships, World Para Athletics Championships, IAAF Continental Cup, World Athletics Cross Country Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, Diamond League and Universiade. Athletics Essendon has won the prestigious H. H. Hunter Memorial Shield 20 times, 13 of which have occurred since 2000, with the most recent win in 2021.[5][6] The shield is named after Herb Hunter (footballer)|Herbert Humphreys Hunter, Captain of the 7th. Battalion 1st. Division A.I.F,[7] and is awarded to the best overall team performance at the Victorian Track and Field Championships.[8]

History

Essendon Harriers became affiliated with the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association (V.A.A.A)[9][10][11] on April 14th 1897.[12] In 1906, Dad Wheatley|Gregory "Dad" Wheatley[13][14] became the club's first international representative, competing at the 1906 Intercalated Games|1906 Olympic Games in Athens|Athens, Greece.[15]

Aberfeldie athletics track opened in 1972.[16] Six years later the Essendon Harriers merged with East Melbourne Harriers under the name Essendon-E.M.H.[17] The merge saw Australian coach Neville Sillitoe OAM join the club and in doing so brought across a number of sprints and jumps champions,[18] including Peter Norman.[19][20] Up until 1993 Essendon had been a men's only club, this changed when Essendon-E.M.H merged with Essendon-Aberfeldie and became Athletics Essendon.[21][22]
