Early life and education

Anastasia Trofimova was born in Moscow, USSR and later moved to Canada. Trofimova earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto/Sheridan College in Communication, Culture and Information Technology and her Master's degree from the University of Amsterdam in International Relations[6].

Filmography

Trofimova has made several films in Iraq and Syria, documenting the expansion and fall of the "Islamic State"[7][8].

In 2015, Trofimova traveled to northeast Syria to direct and film "Her War: Women vs. ISIS"[9][10], a documentary on new recruits joining the Kurdish Women's Protection Units (YPJ)[11]. Hers was the first international crew to receive permission to live at a YPJ training camp for the entire duration of training[12].

Later that year, she came to northern Iraq to direct "Victims of ISIS"[13][14], a documentary on the ISIS slave trade of Yazidis[15] and a smuggler who was trying to save them.

In 2016, Trofimova directed "Congo, My Precious"[16], a documentary on the "resource curse"[17] of the Democratic Republic of Congo[18].

In 2017, Trofimova and her crew returned to Syria to film "The Road to Raqqa"[19][20] and were one of the few permitted to document the front lines during the siege of Raqqa[21] by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)[22].

In 2018 and 2019 Trofimova had returned to Iraq to direct "Mosul Between War and Peace"[23][24], "Rivers of Discord: Iraq's Water Crisis"[25][26] and "Sons of the Graveyard"[27][28]
