Amila Karunanayake (අමිල කරුණානායක, born 26 July 1982) is a Sri Lankan film actor and former model who appears in Sinhala language films and teledrama series.

He was one of the leading ramp models of his time and represented the country in international pageants. After modeling for numerous advertisements and music videos he made his film debut with Rupantharana.[1]

Amila Karunanayake graduated in Fashion Designing and worked as a fashion designer before pursuing a career in acting. He is the founder of one of the leading local Men's wear brand "ADETAIL"[2][3][4]

Personal Life

Amila was born in 26th july 1982 in Nagoda, Kalutara.[5] Amila went to Kalutara Vidyalaya for his primary education. He was an outstanding athlete in athletics, and he went on to win under 13 all-island long jump with a record. That paved the path to getting a scholarship to attend Nalanda College, Colombo.[6][7]

Acting Career

Starting off with Nalaka Vithanage's Rupantharana, Amila played a villain role in "Porisadaya"[8] which got him nominated for best villain at the TV Derana film awards 2019. Amila played the lead role in the "Rom-Com" movie. Also played in "Sikuru Yogaya" movie (2019), and a significant role was played in the movie "Face To Face" and "Monalisa" (2021). Especially Amila Karunanayake played an obsessive lover in an award-winning Maldivian director Seaxan Ali's horror movie "Kaushi" (2018).[9] Ali roped him again for his movie "Soul"[10] which he made for the Saarc film awards 2020. His performance in the Sinhala film "Kabaddi" (2021) marked a turning point and his role 'Manuranga' received great reviews and criticism from the audience.[11][12][13]

Apart from the movies, Amila has taken part in teledramas as well. He did a triple role in Director Bennet Rathnayake's "Palingu Piyapath". He did significant roles in two historical tv series directed by Sanath Abeysekara titled "Urumayaka Aragalaya" and "Mahaviru Pandu" on Hiru TV. He did main roles in teledramas "Sansara Sihine" and "Duwili Sulanga" telecasted in 2021.[14][15]

Modelling Career

His modelling career started with winning the title of "Man of the year" in 2007, and Mister Sri Lanka the same year. He represented the country at Mr. International held in Malaysia in 2007.[16][17] He represented Sri Lanka again for the Man Hunt International held in South Korea in 2011[18][19][20]. Amila took part in almost all the leading fashion shows such as Colombo Fashion Week|Colombo fashion week, AOD, Moratuwa University, Hameedias, Raffles, Lift, ‘The New Yorker’ Fashion Show in Aid of ‘Ma Sewana’[21], etc of his time. Later he also contributed as a judge in modelling pageants.[22][23]

Hosting Career

Amila went on to host TV shows expanding his area of work. One of the biggest shows he hosted is "Band the Band" a reality show of an interschool competition for musical bands telecasted in 2019 on ITN.[24] And he was hosting a TV chat show called "Sirasa Mirror" in 2015.
