Dr Amarjit Singh Manhas is an Indian politician who is currently the Treasurer of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and Chairman of the co-ordination committee of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee[1]. A low-profile leader and a grassroots worker, Dr. Amarjit Singh Manhas has been the Chairman of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority from 2007 to 2011.[2]

Early life, Education and Political Career

Dr Amarjit Singh Manhas was born to freedom fighter Raghbir Singh Manhas [3] and Harbhajan Kaur on 7 October 1958, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, into a Sikh Rajput Family belonging to village Bhungarni, Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Dr Amarjit Singh Manhas is a Phd in politics from Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Contemporary Studies, University of Mumbai. In his doctoral degree he researched the behaviour of voters of a Lok Sabha segment over 20 years.

Political Career

Dr Manhas has been an active member of the Indian National Congress since 1978. He has worked at various levels in the student and youth wing of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, and All India Congress Committee under the guidance of Gurudas Kamat. In his early years he was the General Secretary of National Students' Union of India Maharashtra wherein he played a crucial role in organising National Students' Union of India's National convention in 1984 at Nagpur under the presidentship of Avinash Pande and Ramesh Chennithala (President All India NSUI). He also participated in the XII International Youth and Students Festival in Moscow in 1985 as an Indian delegate. Dr Amarjit Singh Manhas was the treasurer for Mumbai Regional Congress Committee from 2003 to 2015. Dr Amarjit Singh Manhas' contribution to the cause of public health care is remarkably noticeable. His family was instrumental in founding a 120-bed hospital under Guru Nanak Quin Memorial Trust (Charitable) which was established by Sri Guru Singh Sabha Mumbai. He is the trustee of the Hospital and Nursing Institute which are managed efficiently by the trust. He was the Chairman of MHADA Mumbai from 2007 to 2011[4] wherein he played a major role in giving 12,000 affordable homes in mere four years. During his tenure at MHADA he introduced a transparent lottery system for allocation of homes to the needy. He has served the University of Mumbai, his alma mater, as an elected member of the senate and management council for over 30 years. He was the chairman of Grievance committee of the University of Mumbai. The University of Mumbai had also nominated him as Trustee of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Museum).
