Alua Adwoba Arthur (born May 29, 1978) is a Ghanaian-American Death midwife.[1] In 2015, Alua founded Going with Grace, an end of life planning and death doula training organization.[2]

Early Life and Education

Alua Arthur was born to Rev. Dr. Appianda Arthur and Aba Arthur (Birth name) in Ghana. She has three sisters including Netflix CMO Bozoma Saint John[3], educator Dr. Ahoba Arthur, and American actress imdbname:2353060. Her family lived in Nairobi, Kenya, Washington, D.C. and settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado when she was 11.

In 2000, Arthur graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Psychology and Sociology.[4][5] She received her Doctorate of Law from the University of Colorado School of Law in 2003.[6][5][7]

Career

Alua began her career as a lawyer at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, working in social justice. In 2012 she took a leave of absence and supported her brother in law Peter Saint John through his terminal illness with Burkitt lymphoma|Burkitt's Lymphoma until his death in 2013[8][9][10]. In 2015, Arthur founded Going with Grace, an end of life planning, and death doula training organization in Los Angeles, California.

Arthur has been a keynote speaker at Yale University for the annual Kenneth and Georgia Barwick Lecture on Death Work and Palliative Care in the Afterlife of Slavery[11], and the 2019 EndWell Conference.[9] She has also been featured in Refinery29, Vogue (magazine), CNN, Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and Goop (company)|goop Podcast speaking about the importance of end of life planning, the work of a death doula, and how COVID-19 has increased the need for end of life support.
