Albinder Dhindsa is an Indian entrepreneur and the co-founder of Blinkit (formerly Grofers), a quick commerce and online grocery delivery platform. He is widely recognized for his role in building one of India’s earliest large-scale online grocery delivery startups and later transforming it into a quick commerce company that delivers essentials within minutes. Dhindsa’s entrepreneurial work has positioned him among leading figures in the Indian startup ecosystem, particularly in the areas of e-commerce and technology-driven supply chain innovation.[1]
Early life and education
Dhindsa was born in India and pursued his early education in Delhi. He later studied engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he developed an interest in technology, logistics, and business systems. Following his undergraduate studies, he worked in technology and consulting before pursuing higher education. Dhindsa earned an MBA from Columbia Business School in New York, which helped shape his interest in global entrepreneurship and technology-driven business models.
Career
Early career
Before founding his own company, Dhindsa gained experience in consulting and finance. He worked as a transportation analyst at UBS Investment Bank in New York, focusing on large-scale logistics and operational strategies. Later, he joined Zomato as the head of international operations, where he oversaw the company’s global expansion efforts. His work at Zomato gave him exposure to technology-driven food delivery platforms and the challenges of scaling consumer-facing services.[2]
Founding Grofers
In 2013, Dhindsa co-founded Grofers along with Saurabh Kumar. Initially launched as a hyperlocal delivery service, Grofers connected local stores with customers through a mobile application. Over time, the company evolved into a full-stack online grocery delivery platform, raising significant venture capital funding from investors such as SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, and Tiger Global. Grofers focused on affordability and mass-market appeal by offering competitively priced groceries and household essentials. Under Dhindsa’s leadership as chief executive officer (CEO), Grofers expanded operations across multiple Indian cities and became a major competitor in the online grocery delivery sector.[3]
Transition to Blinkit
In 2021, Grofers underwent a major rebranding and was renamed Blinkit, shifting its focus to the emerging quick commerce model. Blinkit began offering 10- to 20-minute delivery of groceries and daily essentials through a network of micro-warehouses and dark stores. Dhindsa spearheaded this transition, positioning Blinkit as a leader in India’s rapidly growing quick commerce market.5 In 2022, Zomato announced the acquisition of Blinkit in an all-stock deal valued at around US$568 million. Following the acquisition, Dhindsa continued to lead Blinkit under Zomato’s ownership, integrating the company’s operations with Zomato’s broader food delivery and technology ecosystem.[4]
Recognition
Dhindsa has been featured in several business publications, including Forbes India, Economic Times, and Business Standard, for his role in shaping India’s e-commerce and quick commerce landscape. He is frequently cited as one of the pioneering Indian startup founders who helped popularize online grocery delivery in India and later contributed to the growth of instant commerce platforms.
