The Alberta Derby, although it hasn't been continuously run every year since its start in 1905, it does have the distinction of being the province of Alberta's most run race (100 different years). The first Alberta Derby was raced before Alberta became a province. Alberta was still a district in the North West Territory until September 1st, 1905. The first Alberta Derby preceded that by nearly 2 months as it was run for the first time at the Calgary Fair on July 7, 1905. At that time it was as an Alberta bred handicap race open to any age thoroughbred. It was run at the old Victoria Park half mile track in Calgary till 1916 and then at Exhibition Track in Edmonton in 1917.[1][2]
It was restarted in 1931 by RJ Speers who is considered as the Father of Racing on the prairies. This time it was set up for 3 year old Western Canada Bred thoroughbreds. It was run till 1942 at Chinook Park in Calgary which was a mile in circumference.[3][4]
From 1943 to 1973 it was raced at either Victoria Park or Exhibition Track half mile tracks at varied distances.[5][6]
The Stampede Park era began in 1974 as the old Victoria Park was refurbished to 5/8ths mile in circumference and major changes were made to the grandstand as well. The race grew in stature from a modest $12,500 purse in 1974 to $125,000 in 2008 which was the year that Stampede Park closed its doors to horse racing.[7][8]
2009 and 2010 saw no Alberta Derby run, but in 2011 Alberta Downs, which was a brand new racetrack, kept the Alberta Derby tradition going, this time on a 7/8ths of a mile turf course. Alberta Downs raced the Derby 3 more times after that till 2014.[9]
In 2015 the Alberta Derby moved north to Grande Prairie and Evergreen Park. Four local horsemen (Al Side, Ken Drysdale, Ed Welsh, and Dennis Dale) have donated the bulk of the purse money for this race every year it has been at Evergreen Park. The latest purse was $55,400.[10]
