Akademi Sains Pendang (English: Pendang Science Academy) is a secondary school in Pendang District, Kedah, Malaysia. It was established under the name of Sekolah Menengah Sains Pendang in 2021.[1] It was officially launched by YB Datuk Dr. Radzi Jidin, Right Minister of Education, accompanied by YBhg. Datuk Yusran Shah Mohd Yusof, Head Secretary of Ministry of Education (Malaysia)|Malaysian Ministry of Education, YBhg. Datin Sri Hajah Nor Zamani Abdol Hamid, Head Director of Malaysian Education and Dato' Haji Pkharuddin Haji Ghazali, Deputy Head Director of Malaysian Education (SDK), on 5 December 2021.[1] The school is the first school in Malaysia to adopt the Advanced Smart Education Program, which was approved by the Ministry of Education (Malaysia) of Education on 29th August 2019. History
On 7th December 2017, the Advanced Smart Education Program concept was approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. [2] On 19th July 2018, the base for the Advanced Smart Education Program was approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and on 29th August 2019, the Malaysian Ministry of Education officially approved the use of the Advanced Smart Education Program for use in government schools. [2]Meanwhile, construction started on Akademi Sains Pendang in late 2018, and finished by early 2021. Thus, the Malaysian Ministry of Education decided to de facto test the Advanced Smart Education Program in Akademi Sains Pendang.
Opening of the school
Akademi Sains Pendang officially opened on April 2021 under the name Sekolah Menengah Sains Pendang, later changing it to Akademi Pintar Pendang, then Akademi Sains Pendang by January 2022. Akademi Sains Pendang chose 40+ students in April 2021, and 40+ students later in July 2021, having a total of 88 students in the first batch. In April 2022, Akademi Sains Pendang chose 80+ students for the second batch, giving the school a total of 160+ students.
Etymology
The initial name, Sekolah Menengah Sains Pendang, roughly translated to English, meant "Pendang Secondary School of Science". Sekolah Menengah Sains Pendang was chosen because it was the default name. However, En. Harris Ganae Bin Ninar, the principal of Akademi Sains Pendang, wanted to make the school unique from the other schools. He chose Akademi Pintar Pendang, which roughly translated meant "Pendang Smart Academy", then eventually settled on Akademi Sains Pendang, after a schoolwide referendum.
