Aiken is the biggest city in Aiken County, which is located in the western part of South Carolina, and it also serves as the county seat. The other major city in the Central Savannah River Area is Augusta, although this one is one of the two biggest. Aiken is a city in South Carolina that was established in 1835 and named for William Aiken, who served as president of the South Carolina Railroad. When Aiken County was established in 1871 from portions of Orangeburg, Lexington, Edgefield, and Barnwell counties, this area was included into it as a new municipality.

The University of South Carolina at Aiken is located in the city of Aiken. Estimates provided by the 2019 United States Census place the town's population at 30,869. In 1997, the National Civic League honoured Aiken by bestowing upon it the All-America City Award. In addition to this honour, Southern Living dubbed Aiken the "greatest little town in the South."

Aiken is located about in the middle of Aiken County. It is located along U.S. Route 1 and 78, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) northeast of Augusta, Georgia. The city is located about six miles (ten kilometres) to the north of Interstate 20, which may be accessed through United States Route 1 and South Carolina Highway 19 (Exit 18). (Exit 22).

According to the data provided by the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total land area of 20.7 square miles (53.6 km2), while the remaining 0.15 square miles (0.4 km2), which accounts for 0.68 percent of the city's total area, is comprised of water.

Aiken has a humid subtropical climate, which is typified by hot, humid summers and chilly, dry winters. Despite having a climate that is similar to that of the rest of the state, the temperatures in Aiken are consistently more moderate. The amount of precipitation that falls throughout the year is rather constant, with the exception of a few snowstorms in the colder months. Generally speaking, precipitation takes the form of rain. On January 21, 1985, the temperature recorded was 4 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), whereas on August 21, 1983, the temperature recorded was 109 degrees Fahrenheit (42.8 degrees Celsius).
