Ai-ai (Chinese: 愛愛, May 1919 – August 4, 2004), born Jian Yue-e (Chinese: 簡月娥), was a Taiwanese Hokkien popular music singer hailing from Xinzhuang Branch of Taipei Prefecture (now Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City).[1]

History

Carrer

After graduating from Xinzhuang Public School, Jian Yue-e, whose real name is Ai Ai (May 1919 – August 4, 2004), became acquainted with Guo Bo-rong, a shareholder of the Bo-You record company and the owner of the "Guo Chunxing Tea House" (郭春興茶行) in Dadaocheng, through her nephew and friend. Since the company was recruiting singers at the time, she was recruited and recorded her first record "Yearning for You in the Snow Plum Blossoms" (梅雪思君) and "Twilight Appointment" (黃昏約). The record was well received and soon after, Columbia Records (古倫美亞唱片) signed her as an exclusive singer.[2]

On May 1, 1934, she and Zhou Tian-wang (the head of the literary and artistic department) both entered Columbia Records.[3]

After marrying Zhou Tian-wang, she became immensely popular due to her performance of "Spring All Over My Face" (滿面春風), a song written by her husband and composed by Deng Yu-xian.[4]

During World War II, due to the Taiwanese record industry being controlled by the military government, Taiwanese popular music could not be produced, and she temporarily bid farewell to the music industry.

After the war, she and Zhou Tian-wang formed the "Gele Record Company" (歌樂唱片公司), but they had to close down due to the authorities' disregard for copyright and rampant piracy.

In addition to singing popular songs, she also recorded many Taiwanese opera records, using her real name "Yue-e" or another stage name "Honglian" (紅蓮).[5][6]

Later life

In her later years, she underwent cataract surgery for her eyes.

In the early morning of August 4th, 2004, she passed away at the age of 86 in the Cheng Hsin General Hospital. Her public memorial service was held on August 25th at Taipei City Mortuary Services Office Second Funeral Parlor.

Personal life

After Zhou Tian-wang joined Columbia Records, he developed feelings of admiration towards Jian Yue-e. Later on, he even wrote works such as "Riverbank Spring Dream" (河邊春夢) and "Moonlight on the River" (江上月影) for her.[7] After knowing each other for many years, the two got married in 1940.[8]

Origin of art name

The Columbia Records executives, upon seeing her lovely appearance and lively personality, gave her the stage name "Ài-àii" for ease of remembrance by the audience.
