Ahmedabad is the most populous city in the Indian state of Gujarat, and it is also the state capital. Gujarat's administrative capital and the home of the Gujarat High Court, Ahmedabad serves as the district's administrative centre. Based on 2011 population data, Ahmedabad is the fifth-most populous city in India, with a total population of 5,633,927 people, while the encompassing metropolitan agglomeration has a population of 6,357,693, making it the seventh-most populated city in India. Ahmedabad is located near the banks of the Sabarmati River, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) from Gujarat's capital, Gandhinagar, which is also known as the "twin city."

Ahmedabad has risen to become an important economic and industrial centre in the country. With Kanpur, it is the second-largest producer of cotton in India, earning the nickname "Manchester of India" for its contribution to the industry. Ahmedabad's stock exchange (which operated till it was closed in 2018) was the second-oldest in the nation. Ahmedabad is a city where cricket is a prominent sport. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, which was just completed and is the biggest stadium in the world, can seat 132,000 people. A World-Class Sports Enclave (SVP Sports Enclave Ahmedabad) is currently under development and will be one of the largest sports centres (sports cities) in India. Commerce, communication, and construction have all benefited from the impacts of liberalisation of the Indian economy, which has shifted the city's economy toward tertiary sector industries such as commerce and communication. Increasing urbanisation has led to an expansion of the building and housing sectors, which in turn has resulted in the construction of skyscrapers in Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad was rated third on Forbes' list of the fastest-growing cities in the world for the decade ending in 2010. Ahmedabad was named India's finest city to live in by The Times of India in 2012, according to the publication. It is projected that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Ahmedabad metropolis would be $80 billion in 2020. When it comes to living conditions, Ahmedabad is the third best city in India, according to the Ease of Living Index for 2020.

According to the Smart Towns Mission of the Indian government, Ahmedabad has been chosen as one of the hundred Indian cities that will be transformed into smart cities over the next five years. The Historic City of Ahmedabad, often known as Old Ahmedabad, was designated as India's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017.
