Ahmed Yaqoub AlMaazmi is an Emirati historian, translator, and academic specializing in the history of the Indian Ocean world. He earned his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University in 2025, with a dissertation on the history of science and empire in the early modern Indian Ocean world.[1] AlMaazmi is currently an Assistant Professor at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU)[2] , and has been noted for his contributions to Gulf and Indian Ocean historical scholarship and translation.

Education and Career

AlMaazmi was born and raised in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. He received his B.A. (with Honors) in International Studies from Zayed University. After graduating, he interned with the United Nations World Food Programme and subsequently studied cultural and linguistic anthropology at Rutgers University as a Fulbright Fellow. He then enrolled in Princeton University’s Ph.D. program in Near Eastern Studies, focusing on the transregional history of the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf.[3] In May 2025, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, titled “An Enchanted Sea: Occultism, Empire, and Society in the Western Indian Ocean, 1450–1750,” under advisor Bernard Haykel and Michael F. Laffan. Other committee members included scholars Michael Cook, Matthew Melvin-Koushki, and Fahad Bishara.[4]
