Abraham Osinubi (born 12 May 1963) is a Professor of Anatomy, Medical Doctor[1], Business Management Expert and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology[2]. He served as the Pioneer Executive Director of the University of Lagos Business School[3][4][5] from June 2018 to May 2022[6] where he led the school in securing its approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in July 2019[7]. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Lagos University Medical Society, and is the Academic Leader for the Case-Based Team of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos[8]. He was appointed the Director, Medilag Consult, College of Medicine, University of Lagos in January 2023[8].

Osinubi co-authored the first and second editions of the National Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes Management in Nigeria in 2012 and 2013, respectively[9][10] and has written two textbooks of Anatomy and over 120 peer-reviewed papers in National and Foreign learnt journals[11], cutting across science, medicine and humanities.

Professor Osinubi is an academic, researcher and administrator who has been inducted into the fellowship of six prestigious academies[9][12] within and outside Nigeria and facilitates Leadership and Organizational Behaviour in the University of Lagos Business School. His research exploits are notable in Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuroendocrine Biology, Role of Free Radicals and Glutathione in health and disease.[2]

He has successfully supervised 16 Ph.D. candidates, many of whom are now Professors.[9]

Early Life and Education

Osinubi was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria to late Chief Zacchaeus Adeyemi Osinubi, the Agba-Akin of Ijebu Igbo and late Chief (Mrs.) Alice Afolake Osinubi[7]. Osinubi attended All Saints’ Anglican Primary School, Montgomery Road, Yaba from 1969-1975 and carried out his secondary school education at Government College, Ketu, Lagos, Nigeria from September 1975 to June 1980[7]. He was the Head Boy (Male Senior Prefect) at Government College, Ketu, Lagos and passed out with a Division One Distinction in the West African Examination Council June, 1980 Examinations[7]. Osinubi was admitted into the University of Ibadan for his undergraduate studies, Medicine and Surgery in October 1981, where he graduated and acquired an M.B.,B.S from the school in September 1987.[10]

Osinubi obtained his Master of Science in Anatomy from the University of Lagos in the year 2000 and subsequently got awarded his Ph.D. from the school in the year 2006. He then went on to acquire his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria[7].

Career

Osinubi joined the University of Lagos staff on 1st of March, 2001 as a Lecturer II[13]. Following the completion of his doctorate in 2006, the Lagos State University (LASU) appointed Osinubi as an Associate Professor and he served as the Head of Department (HOD) of the Department of Anatomy, Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) from 2008 to 2009[7]. From there he returned to the University of Lagos where he first served as a Faculty Examinations Officer for the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos from 2009 to 2010 and then became the HOD of the Department of Anatomy, UNILAG from 2010 to 2012[13][8]. Osinubi served from 2009 to 2014 as the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (now Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria) and was also the Treasurer of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists - Nigerian Chapter from 2009 to 2018[7].

In the University of Lagos, Osinubi was the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Lagos from 2012 to 2014.[9] and served as the Pioneer Editor-in-Chief of the University of Lagos Journal of Basic Medical Sciences from 2012 to 2016[7]. He served as the Vice-President of the Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria from 2014 to 2017[14], Chaired the Committee on Staff Training and Development of the Non-Teaching Staff in the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos from 2015 to 2018 and Chaired the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Committee for Biomedical Research from 2016 to 2020[7]. The University of Lagos appointed Osinubi to the rank of full Professor in 2015 and he delivered his inaugural lecture, “The Anatomist: Jack-of-all-Trades, Master of all” on 8th of November, 2017[15]

Osinubi now serves as the current Vice-President of the Lagos University Medical Society and is the Team Lead and Academic Leader, Case-Based Team, College of Medicine, University of Lagos[8]. He was appointed the Director, Medilag Consult Board in January 2023[8].

As a Business Management Expert, Osinubi was the Global Programme Director of Unicorn Group between June and November 2022 and has been a member of the Advisory Board of Max International since 2016 till date, and also co-authored the paper “Rethinking Blue Ocean Strategy in Disruptive Uncertain Times” in Lagos Business and Management Review (2022)[16]. He also conducts regular business and health seminars both online and in-person in different parts of the world.[17][16]

University of Lagos Business School

Osinubi served as the Pioneer Executive Director of the University of Lagos Business School from June 2018 to May 2022[5][6]. During this period, he saw to the approval of the School from the National Universities Commission [18] whose approval was gotten on the 22nd of July 2019. He oversaw the admission of the school as the first Nigerian School to be inducted into the membership of the Business Graduates Association, London in August 2020[19] and also saw to the recognition of the school by the Association of African Business Schools, Sandston, South Africa on the 12th of May 2021.[20]

Osinubi's led administration instituted Webinars and Special Seminars, where international experts were invited to talk to the world on current and topical issues with a view to provide solutions to health, economic and political challenges. It was also during his administration that the Executive MBA (Weekend and Online modes), DBA (Doctor of Business Administration), Executive MPH (Master of Public Health) and Executive NIF (Master of Non-Interest Finance) courses were commenced in the school[21][22]. On the 18th of January, 2022, the School graduated its first set during the 52nd University of Lagos Convocation Ceremonies[23].

Fellowships and Awards

Osinubi having served in the Medical and Anatomy field of education for many decades has received numerous fellowships and awards for his service[9]. In December 2009, Osinubi was awarded Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) by the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) whose convocation was held on Saturday 24th April, 2010 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts, USA[7]. The Anatomical Society of Nigeria also conferred on him the FASN (Fellow of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria) on 23rd September, 2016 at the 13th AGM and Scientific Conference at the Ekiti State University[7]. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria (FSECAN) as awarded in 2019[8], a foundation Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialists in Nigeria (FAMedS) awarded in 2021[12][8] and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine (FNAMed) also awarded in 2021[24]. In 2022, Osinubi became a Fellow of the Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria (FEMSON)[7].

On November 20th, 2021, Osinubi was presented the Global Impact Award by Max International, USA and was also given the Professor Herbert Nagasawa Global Award, for Consistency, Dedication and Integrity by Max International, USA on the 16th January 2022[7].

Community Service and Contributions to National Development

He developed and published the 21-point action plan for the attainment and maintenance of perfect health (2017).[15]

He co-authored the first and second editions of the National Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes Management in Nigeria.[9][10]

Personal Life

Osinubi married Folakemi G. Osinubi in 1989. They have 3 children[7].
