Zinoviy Yakovlevich Lurye (September 16, 1926 - May 31, 2020) was a Soviet and Ukrainian scientist working in the field of electromechanics and hydraulics. Doctor of Technical Sciences (1990), Professor (1996). Took part in the Great Patriotic War. Research area: dynamics and optimization of hydraulic systems of technological objects.

Biography

Zinoviy Lurye was born in Gomel, Belarus on September 16, 1926 in the family of an office worker. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War he graduated from the 8th class. In July 1942 together with his family he was evacuated to Kurgan city, Russia. There, at the age of 15, he began working as a turner at a defense plant of mortar armaments under People's Commissariat (Narkomat).

In 1945 he graduated from the Air Force special school #11 in Sverdlovsk (Russia), and then in 1947 from Kharkiv Aviation Technical School (Ukraine). In 1947-1953 he served in various air force units of the Soviet Army. While in the army he graduated from Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute with a degree in Mathematics and Physics. In 1953 Zinoviy was honorably discharged from the army in the rank of senior lieutenant and worked for three years as a teacher of physics in one of Kharkiv schools. While working he also studied at the Moscow Technological University (MIREA) graduating in 1957. In 1955-1961 Lurye held engineering positions at the Ukrainian Project Institute of the Electrotechnical Industry.

In 1959 Zinoviy enrolled in post-graduate studies at the All-Union Power Engineering Institute. At the same time he worked as a senior researcher at Zaporizhia branch of the Institute of Automatics (1961-1964). In 1964 he defended his Ph.D. dissertation on the automation of technological processes in metallurgy.

In 1964-1967 Zinoviy Lurye worked first as an assistant and then an associate professor at Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University. There he did research on using computing techniques to analyze random processes related to powerful excavators.

In 1967-1985 he worked at the Research Institute of Management and Production Automation (NIIAP, Kharkiv, Ukraine). Through a competitive process he was elected position of a head of a laboratory and then a head of the department. He supervised and was personally involved in a major scientific achievement: development of a technique aimed at the increase of productivity of metalworking equipment through dynamic process optimization. This was a significant contribution to the development of control systems based on defined criteria. It was based on algorithms used for solving Travelling salesman problem, which made it possible to work out control programs capable of minimizing the time needed for a technological process based on a particular type of equipment. This resulted in practical recommendations of dynamic reallocation of workpieces and tools used for forge-press equipment. The results of this work were implemented in the industry to create turret presses and put them into a serial production at the Chimkent Production Association specializing in manufacturing forge-press equipment. It resulted in savings totaling 1.5 million rubles (1989).

In 1985 Lurye transferred from NIIAP to the Research Institute Gidroprivod in Kharkiv as head of a laboratory. The team he supervised developed systems of forge-press equipment as well as an interactive system to solve multicriteria optimization tasks. He founded a scientific school, which focused on modeling, dynamics and optimization of hydraulic systems equipment for general industrial and special purposes.

In 1990 Zinoviy Lurye completed theoretical generalization and a solution of a major scientific task of optimization of dynamic processes of sheet-stamping equipment. He successfully defended his doctoral dissertation.

From 1993 he held a position of professor at the Department of Hydraulic Machines at the National Technical University (Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute). He took an active part in promoting scientific and practical knowledge in the field of modeling, dynamics and optimization of hydraulic systems equipment for general industrial and special purposes. He was a member of editorial boards of the Ukrainian scientific and practical journal "Industrial Hydraulics and Pneumatics", Association of Specialists on Industrial Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and a Specialized Council for the Defense of Doctoral Dissertations.

For his engineering, scientific and pedagogical activity Zinoviy Lurye was awarded medals and honorary distinctions: "USSR Inventor", bronze medal of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy; merit badges "Winner of the Socialist Competition" in 1973 and 1980; "Leader of 9th and 11th five-year plans" Ministry of Machinery and Tool Industry; medal "Veteran of Labor"; decoration "Excellence in Education of Ukraine".

For his labor activity during the Great Patriotic War and his service in the Soviet Army, Zinoviy was awarded medals: "30 years of the Soviet Army and Navy", "50-year anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War", "Marshal Zhukov", "60-year anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War". Scientific Activity

Professor Zinoviy Lurye founded scientific school on modeling, dynamics and optimization of hydraulic equipment systems general and special industrial purposes. Two doctors and eleven candidates successfully defended their dissertations under his leadership. He left rich legacy: ~ 300 scientific papers, 20 copyright certificates and patents, 5 teaching manuals. He is recognized in the Ukrainian Encyclopedia [2]
