Zimri Palaseen

Zimri Palaseen is a sub-tehsil of Musakhail District, in Balochistan, Pakistan. It is located north-east of Musakhel Bazar, the district headquarters of District Musakhail. It is situated on left side of N-50 National Highway|N-50 (Dera Ismail Khan-Zhob Road).

Its shares borders with Dera Ismail Khan District district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the north-east, Sherani District in the north and north-West, Tehsil Toi Sar in the west, Tehsil Drug in South and Dera Ghazi Khan District|Dera Ghazi Khan district, Punjab, Pakistan in the east. The coordinates of sub-tehsil complex are 31°15'56.12"N, 70° 7'15.66"E.

History

The known history[1] tells that the area was first conquered by the Mughal Empire|Mughals in 1500 AD and the area was part of Kandahar Province. In 1600, the area came under the Safavid dynasty|Safavid kings and, in 1700, it came under the Ghilzai Empire. Nader Shah|Nadir Shah took control of the area after the defeat of Ghilzai Empire. After the Assassination of Nader Shah|assassination of Nadir Shah in 1747, Ahmad Shah Durrani became the ruler of the area. After that, Dost Mohammad Khan Barakzai took control of the area.

The area came under the British control after the first Afghan War in 1878-79 AD under the Treaty of Gandamak. After getting independence from the British, the area became the part of Pakistan in 1947 after the annexation vote of Quetta Municipal Committee.

Geography and Biodiversity

Zimri Palaseen is mostly a mountainous region. Its total area is about 535 km2. It is on the eastern side of famous mountain Torgahr which is a branch of the Sulaiman Mountains. Torghar is running north to south. Zimri Palaseen area is covered with subtropical broad leave evergreen forest type. The trees and woody shrubs are sparsely scattered mainly confined to ravines and edges of ephemeral streambeds. It has two mini rivers flowing from west to east. One is Ramak Khwar and other is Guzay Khwar. These two mini rivers are the important source of water for the people of Zimri Palaseen. There are many waterfalls in both of these mini rivers.

World Wide Fund for Nature conducted a survey for identification of biodiversity in District Musakhail including Gharhi area of Zimri Palaseen titled, "Identification of Biodiversity Hot Spots in Musakhel District Balochistan" [2]. The writer has been quoted here about flora and fauna of the area below.

"The area is famous for its thick Pine forests and wildlife. The forests mainly consist of Pinus gearadiana, Pinus wallichiana, Olea ferrugenia, Acacia modesta, Prunus eburana, Ficus carrica, Fraxinus xanthoxyliedess and Pistacia khinjuk. It is the habitat of Sulaiman Markhore, Urial and in bird’s sessi partriges, Chakoor partriges, and vultures. There is still reasonable no of Sulaiman Markhore but hunting is common practice of the local inhabitants".

Demography

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics[3] 2017 Census of Pakistan|2017 census, the total population of the Zimri Palaseen is 12,035. The most populated areas are Guzay Alif, Inzrakhail, Gharhi, Sara Durghara, Raghzi, Guzay Bay, and Beer. Most of its population is living in other parts of the country due to very limited sources of income in the area.

Ethnicity

Zimri Palaseen is inhabitant of Pashtuns tribe called Zimri , Zhmaryani[4] or Mazari (tribe)|Mazari. Mazari is a Pashto word used for fierce leopard or panther. The famous sub-tribes of Zimri are Ayub Khail, Muhammad Khail, Nasar Zai, Hussain Zai, Askander Zai, Sheikh Zai, Bak Khail, and Ashak etc.

Language

Pashto is the only language spoken in Zimri Palaseen. As there are no other ethnicities in the area, all the locals speak it.

Climate

The climate is arid and Subtropics|subtropical. Zimri Palaseen area comes under the active influence zone of Monsoon of South Asia|monsoon rainfall in summer. Summer is long and moderately hot in lower eastern areas while very pleasant in upper western areas. Monsoon rainfall occurs during the months of July to September. In winter season, rainfall occurs due to westerly disturbance. The high altitude areas such as Mizri Ghar (Tor Ghar) receive considerable amount of snowfall. Sometime snowfall occurs up to 5 to 6 ft.

Education

Currently there are very few government schools in Zimri Palaseen, and the teachers rarely come to school to teach the students. The enrolled children ratio is very low as compared to non-enrolled children. The literacy rate is the lowest in Pakistan and it is rarely 1 percent. The few who are literate, have received their education outside from Zimri Palaseen such as Punjab, KP and Sindh.

Livelihood

The livelihood of the people of the area is livestock[5] and agriculture. Agriculture is very limited to riverine areas and valleys. The area is full of green rangeland and meadows. Therefore the area is favorable for livestock[6].

Recreational places

Zimri Palaseen is full of greenery due to considerable amount of rainfall it receive during monsoon and snowfall in winter season. There are many waterfalls in Zimri Palaseen. Beside waterfalls there are fresh water springs in the area. The famous one is Tauda Cheena in Guzay Alif.

The most prominent place of tourism is Mizri Ghar, the third-highest mountain of the Sulaiman Mountains. It receives heavy snowfall in the winter season, which remians there for several months. The region is full of green lush valleys of Chilghoza pine and wild olive. It is also habitat of the Sulaiman Markhor, common leopard, wolf and other wildlife.

In recent years, people from adjoining areas have started visiting the Mizri Ghar in the summer to enjoy the cold climate of the mountain. Similarly, in the winter, people are visiting Mizri Ghar to enjoy snowfall.
