Zia Jaffrey is an American author and professor. Her book, The Invisibles: A Tale of the Eunuchs of India, was published in 1996. She has written for Vogue, The Nation, The New York Times, Elle, and The Washington Post. She ran the front of Elle, where she published literary pieces and curated new and emerging voices. Her work has been anthologized in India at 75 and Toni Morrison: The Last Interview and Other Conversations.[1]

Jaffrey is currently working on a book on Palestinian Americans.

Biography

Jaffrey was born to the Indian culinary writer Madhur Jaffrey.[2]

Career

Jaffrey's career major career launch began when she was working the front of the magazine of Elle.[3]

Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, The Washington Post, Vogue, and Elle. She has covered the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, Pakistan, South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the global AIDS epidemic.[citation needed] Her work has also been anthologized in PEN America's India at 75 and Toni Morrison: The last Interview and Other Conversations.[4]

Jaffrey is a part-time associate teaching professor in the creative writing program at The New School in New York City.[5]

Jaffrey is often a speaker for PEN America[6], and most recently appeared at PEN America's World Voices Literary Festival in New York City on the panel of India at 75: Writing from the Subcontinent and the Future of Free Expression.[7] She has also been interviewed by Kerri Arsenault.[8]

Jaffrey is also on the advisory board of The Seventh Wave[9], which is "a 501(c)(3) arts and literary nonprofit that invites writers, artists, activists, and creators to take part in a conversation surrounding the most pressing social issues of our time", according to their About page.[10]
