Zhuo Zhenxi (Chinese: 禚振西; born 1938[1]) is a Chinese archaeologist known for her research on the Yaozhou kiln site located at Huangbaozhen, Shaanxi Province, where she has been involved with excavations from the age of 30.[2] She is the standing director of the Chinese Ancient Ceramic Society.[1] Zhuo is regarded as important mentor to female archaeologists in China, and has emphasized the importance of a strong community of students, colleagues, and family members in her work.[3]
Career
Zhuo studied at Northwest University in the Department of History from 1957 to 1961[4]. She then worked at the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology for the rest of her career (apart from a gap during the Cultural Revolution) until she retired in 1998[1]. She and her husband, Du Baoren, collaborated throughout her career and split childcare responsibilities to allow them both time to conduct fieldwork. She started leading excavations of the Yaozhou kiln site in 1973, and oversaw decades of research at the site that resulted in a large volume of publications and the creation of a museum at the site where she has worked as a curator after her official retirement.[1] Working conditions were difficult at many points in the Yaozhou excavations, and Zhuo and other archaeologists on the team sleeping on the floor and enduring long hours of excavation and conservation work.[5]
The Yaozhou kilns are a ceramic production site that first developed in the Tang dynasty and remained in use through the Song dynasty. The site is known for its production of sancai ware and of the celadon ware referred to as Yaozhou ware.[6] Zhuo's long-term research on the kilns helped archaeologists understand the organization of ceramic production at the site and the technologies required for high-fired ceramics, making her a trusted expert on the period's ceramics. She also carried out scientific analysis work on Yaozhou ceramics in addition to her excavations, breaking from the general pattern of leaving this work to other specialists.[1]
Awards
Zhuo received the 'Hill Gold Medal' from the British Oriental Ancient Ceramics Society in 1997.[7]
