Zhuang Jin-mei (born June 11, 1970) is a Taiwanese opera performer, playwright, and director. Zhuang is the leading performer of xiaodan (young female) roles at Shiu-Kim Taiwanese Opera Troupe. She was nominated for the Best Performer at the 29th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music.[1]
Biography
Zhuang Jin-mei was born into a family of Taiwanese opera performers. Both her parents were members of Chu Yu-feng Opera Troupe in Chiayi. Her father was a musician in the troupe, while her mother played xiaosheng (young male) roles. At a young age, Zhuang Jin-mei had a strong interest in Taiwanese opera and went with her parents while they performed. She began performing Taiwanese opera in junior high school, starting with minor roles, and her father would also teach her singing and narrating skills[2]. She started performing in TV Taiwanese operas in 1987 and joined Shiu-Kim Taiwanese Opera Troupe at the age of 18 at the invitation of Chang Hsiu-chin, her aunt, taking up the roles of xiaodan in the troupe[3].
She has also written scripts for the troupe, such as Tsui, Yi Kuo Yuan Yang Lei, Chung Kuei Chuan Chi, and San Chun Hui. She was granted the title "Xiaodan with Golden Voice" by the arts and cultural community[4][5][6]. She was nominated for the Best Performer at the 29th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music[1].
