Zheng Qi Jonathan Zhang, also known as Jonathan Zhang (張正奇); (born 25 January, 2000)[1] is a tennis player on the Hong Kong Team.[2][3] He ranked no.308 among junior tennis players.[4] He won six titles on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit between 2015 and 2017. Zhang was ranked no.9 in Hong Kong’s Men’s Singles National Rankings and no.6 in Hong Kong’s Men’s Doubles National Rankings in March 2020.[4][5][6]
Zhang was on the national Hong Kong team for Asian U14 Tennis Championship, World Junior Championship, and Junior Davis Cup.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
Personal Life
Zhang was born in Hong Kong, China.[1] He studied at Diocesan Boys’ School, where he served as the team captain in his senior year and won the 17th consecutive D1 Hong Kong high school title.[3][14] In August 2018, Zhang enrolled at the University of Southern California and transferred to the University of California Santa Barbara in 2020.[4][6][15][16][17]
Professional Tennis Career
While playing for Hong Kong, he ranked no.2 in U10, U12, and U14 tournaments. He also ranked no.1 for U16 and U18 tournaments in Hong Kong.[18] He gained his first ITF title at 14, winning the G4 doubles championship and partnering with Wong Hong-kit in Shenzhen, China.[19][20]
He reached the Nanjing G1 doubles semifinals in 2017.[21][22][23] He received the Sports for Hope Foundation (SFHF) Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards (OJAA).[24][25]
Zhang competed for Hong Kong in the World Junior Championship in New Delhi, India. He claimed 11th place in Asia.[26] In 2016, he competed for the Hong Kong team again, finishing 11th in Asia after going 3-3 in singles and 3-3 in doubles.[18]
In 2020, after transfer to University of California Santa Barbara, the tennis season tournament got cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic before he could play a match as a Gaucho.[27][28]
In February 2021, Zhang won the Boys Level 1 Singles in the Boroondara Junior UTR Tournament.[29] In January 2022, he won 90 points playing singles tournaments in the junior boys’ 18 of the United States Tennis Association.[30]
