Biography
Zhang, originally from Shandong, had a significant role in the Sino-Egyptian military technical cooperation project when he traveled to Egypt in September 1981[1]. Unfortunately, on October 6, while attending a military parade commemorating the eighth anniversary of Operation Badr (1973)|Egypt's crossing of the Suez Canal during the Yom Kippur War, President Sadat was assassinated by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Tragically, Zhang was struck and killed by a stray bullet during the chaos[1]
Zhang was laid to rest at the Unknown Soldier Memorial in Cairo, and on October 10, a wreath was placed at his tomb by Ji Pengfei, China's State Council Secretary-general, accompanied by the Chinese ambassador to Egypt and the minister of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs[2]
In honor of Zhang's sacrifice, memorial services are held at the Chinese embassy in Egypt during the Quinming Festival or Martyrs' Day.[3]
