Zenon Mariak is a Polish neurosurgeon, researcher, and professor who is currently head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Bialystok. He previously served as the Deputy President of the Medical University of Bialystok.[1] He is a member of the Committee of Neurological Sciences at the 5th Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.[1]

Education

Mariak was awarded an MD at the Medical University of Bialystok. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1995 from the Medical University of Bialystok.[1] Since August 2021, Mariak has served on the Council of Health Needs as a representative of the Podlasie Voivode.[2]

Research

His research career begain in 1978, when he contributed to findings in intracranial pressure, rheoencephalography, and cerebral circulation after carotid artery ligations.[3] [4] [5] His international research career began in 1987, when his research on squamous cell carcinoma of the cornea was published in the Ophthalmology Journal, as well as in Acta Neurochirurgica: The European Journal of Neurosurgery.[6] [7] From 1984 to 1986, his research focused on neurological complications in the field of ophthalmology such as histological changes in the sclera in retinal detachment, aphakic eyes, cataract extraction, and spontaneous detachment. [8] [9] [10] [11] From 1991 to 1999, Mariak published significant works in the American Journal of Roentgenology, European Journal of Ophthalmology, Polish Neurology and Neurology Journal, Ophthalmology Journal, Neurology Psychiatry and Brain Research, and the European Journal of Applied Physiology in topics such as cerebral and tympanic temperature relationship, intracranial aneurysms after ligation of the common carotid artery, brain temperature control, technological advancements in computerized recordings of analog signals in intensive neurosurgical care, cognitive dysfunction after SAH ligation, pathogenesis of primary internal ophthalmoplegia, and injuries of cranial nerves II-VII. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] From 2000 to 2008, Mariak published research in the American Journal of Roentgenology, American Journal of Neuroradiology, European Journal of Physiology, and Acta Neurochirurgica: European Journal of Neurosurgery, contributing to the understanding of hemodynamic parameters using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, using artificial neural networks to process intracranial pressure, discovering that tympanic temperature reflects intracranial temperature changes, and the importance of angle correction in the measurement of blood flow velocity via usage of transcranial Doppler sonography. [22] [23] [24] [25] Since 2008, Mariak has published an additional 51 research articles in the field of neurosurgery. [26] Mariak has explored the revival of psychosurgery, commenting that deep brain stimulation is successful in minimizing negative consequences of neuropsychological disorders.[27] Mariak was invited to TVP3 to discuss epileptic events and visual disturbances related to neurological conditions[28] He has been a supervisor of seven doctoral dissertations and a reviewer of ten habilitation theses.
