Zainal Arifin Mochtar (born 8 December 1978), also known as Uceng, is an Indonesian academician, activist, and writer at Gadjah Mada University.

Early life

Zainal was born on 8 December 1978 in Makassar, South Sulawesi.[1][2] He went to Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and graduated in 2003, and earned his master degree from Northwestern University in 2006, followed by PhD from UGM in 2012.[1][2] During his college years, he finished several course programs such as the Summer School Administrative Law UGM-Maastricht University, in Netherlands, in 2006, and the Summer School American Legal System at Georgetown Law School.[2]

Personal life

Zainal is a close friend of Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, whom referred him as a younger brother.[3]

Career

Zainal started his career as a member of task force for preparing the corruption crime court law in 2007 and served as Director of Advocacy at the Anti Corruption Study Center and Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University, from 2008 until 2017.[1] He became a constitutional law lecturer at Gadjah Mada University in 2014 and then served as Member of the Audit Board of the Financial Services Authority from 2015 until 2017, followed by Member of Commissioners of Pertamina from 2016 until 2019.[1] In 2022, Zainal was appointed as a member of the Non-Judicial Resolution Team for Human Rights Violations.[1] He was also appointed as Deputy Chair of the Periodic Tax Oversight Committee from 2023 until 2026.[1]

In 2024, Zainal made his film debut by starring in Dirty Vote, a documentary film which uncovering various structured, systematic, and massive frauds that occurred during 2024 Indonesian presidential election which was done by Prabowo Subianto's candidate, and managed to reach almost 4 million viewers in just a day after released.[1][4]
