Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu born in Lagos on March 27, 1968 is a Consultant Pediatrician, an advocate for women's health, with a particular focus on cancer. Also, the Founder/CEO of Medicaid Foundation and Director at the Board of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).[1][2]

Early life

She was born into the family of Umaru Shinkafi and Rakiya Shinkafi. Her father, a former police officer, Director General of the defunct General of the Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO) now known as State Security Services SSS and the Marafa Sokoto. Her mother was an active lawyer called to the Bar 40 years ago[3]

Family life

She is married to Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Nigerian minister of budget and national planning and former governor of Kebbi State. And she is blessed with two children.[4][5]

Education

Dr Bagudu had her elementary education in Queens College Lagos. After graduating from Queens College Lagos in 1984, she obtained an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine) from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

After which, she then proceeded to the United Kingdom for specialist training in Pediatrics and Neonatology which lasted 9 years. Amongst others, she obtained a Masters in Pediatrics, Diploma in tropical child health and membership of the Royal college of Pediatrics and Child health.

Medicaid cancer foundation

Dr Bagau is a Nigerian philanthropist with years of advocacy and providing assistance in areas of maternal health and Child welfare as well as providing assistance particularly around breast and cervical cancer. This eventually inspired her to start her own NGO, the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF).

Dr Bagudu became a loud voice in the fight against cancers in Nigeria serving as a role model for women particularly in the Northern parts. She has mentored many young adults and shows a keen interest in early year’s education and health. Recently, Dr. Shinkafi Bagudu also became a fundraiser for the treatment of cancer patients and internally displaced persons in the North East of Nigeria.[6]

Political office

Dr. Bagudu has served on many technical committees including the steering committee for the National Cancer Control plan, and a Ministerial committee to build a diagnostic centres in six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
