Zachariah Mar Severios is the youngest Metropolitan within the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and currently serving the Idukki Diocese.[1]
Early life and family
Born on August 19, 1978, in the Chirathilattu family, he is the son of Very Rev. C. John Cor-Episcopa Chirathilattu and Mrs. Lissy. [2]His Grace belongs to the parish of St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Vakathanam-Puthenchantha, under the Kottayam diocese.[3]
Education and academic achievements
Zachariah Mar Severios completed his primary education at J.M.H.S.S., Vakathanam (1991-94), and pre-degree studies at K.G. College, Pampady (1994-96). He further studied for a law degree at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram (1996-99). Additionally, he obtained a postgraduate degree in Syriac literature from M.G. University, Kottayam (2007-09).[4]
Spiritual calling and ordination
Severios enrolled at Kottayam Old Seminary, where he successfully completed his GST (2001-06). He further studied for his BD (Bachelor of Divinity) at Serampore University, completing it during the same period. [5] In 2006, he was appointed to the sub-deaconship, deaconship, and priesthood from his Guru H.G. Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Metropolitan at Njaliyakuzhi Dayara, Vakathanam.[5]
Elevation to metropolitan and responsibilities
Zachariah Mar Severios was chosen as a Metropolitan during the Malankara Syrian Christian Association held at Kolencherry[6] on February 25, 2022. He was granted the status of Ramban at the Parumala Seminary on June 2, 2022. On July 28, 2022, H.H. Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews III Catholicos ordained him as Metropolitan, bestowing upon him the name 'Mar Severios' at St. Mary's Cathedral in Pazhanji.[7][8][9]
Since November 3, 2022, Zachariah Mar Severios has been leading the Idukki diocese.[10][11]
Contributions
Additionally, with the pen-name 'Zacher,' he has written approximately fifteen books.[12] Zachariah Mar Severios is a prominent speaker within the church and beyond. He was one of the main speakers at the Maramon Convention in 2023.[13]
