Yuanyuan Zhang (Chinese: 张媛媛) is a Chinese ballet dancer and principal dancer with the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam. Since joining the company in 2014, she has performed leading roles in both classical and contemporary ballet productions. In 2024, she was promoted to principal dancer, becoming one of the few Chinese-born dancers to achieve that rank in a major European ballet company.[1] Her promotion received coverage in ballet media such as *Pointe Magazine*, which listed her among the notable promotions in 2025 in the international ballet world.[2]
Early life and education
Zhang was born in Korla, Xinjiang, China. She began studying traditional Chinese dance at the age of six and later trained at the Sichuan Dance School in Chengdu. At 16, she enrolled at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, where she developed a foundation in Western classical ballet technique.[3]
Career
In 2014, Zhang won the gold medal at the South African International Ballet Competition.[4] Following the competition, she joined the Dutch National Ballet Junior Company later that year.[3]
She progressed through the company's ranks in subsequent years: élève (2015), corps de ballet (2016), coryphée (2017), grand sujet (2018), and soloist (2019). In December 2024, she was promoted to principal dancer.[5]

Zhang has performed leading roles in major classical and neoclassical productions, including:
- Odette/Odile in Swan Lake
- Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty
- Clara in The Nutcracker and the Mouse King
- Juliet in Romeo and Juliet
She has also appeared in works by choreographers such as George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Wayne McGregor, and David Dawson.
Critical reception
Zhang's performances have been positively received by critics:
- A 2021 gala review in *Bachtrack* described her duet in *Replay*, danced with Vito Mazzeo, as “consuming in its intensity,” noting that she “is a dancer that I had not particularly registered before but will look out for in future.”[6]
- In a 2025 review of *Jewels* by ArtsTalk Magazine, Zhang and partner Jacopo Tissi “delivered a romantic and expressive performance,” with elegant movement that displayed a “soft, ethereal quality.”[7]
