Yossi Avraham Shelley[1] (born October 15, 1957 in Beersheba, Israel), a former Israeli businessman, is currently Israel's ambassador[2] to Brazil.

Biography

Between 1976 and 1983, he served in the Israeli army (Israel Defense Forces), having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. From 1988 to 1989, during his studies, he was president of the Student Union of Ben-Gurion University, Israel. Between 1989 and 1991 he was vice treasurer of the Municipality of Be’er-Sheva,[3] responsible for the municipality's revenue. For the next two years, between 1991 and 1993, he also served as chairman of the board of the tourism company Issta. Lines Ltd. From 1991, he worked as chief of personnel of Be'er Sheva Municipality and took over the presidency of the institution in 1994. In 1998, he served as general manager of the local government's economic service, acting in the provision of municipal services such as water, construction and sewage. Between 2001 and 2002, he was the manager of business development at Milgan Ltd, when he also worked with local municipal services. In 2009, he performed the position of project manager at “Avisror Mohse and Sons Ltd”,[4] having remained until the following year. He was president of the following institutions: “The Ya'acobi Brothers Group”[5] Group (2010-2015), the board of the startup One-Stop Information Knowledge (2010-2015), the “New Gas Company LTD” - Gas distributor for the public and private sector (2006-2007), and the board of the Israel Postal Authority (2002-2005). He also held, among others, the positions of Member of the Council of the Israeli Administrative Court - Ministry of Justice of Israel, and Public Director of the “Beer-Sheva Company for Education and Culture”.

Education

He holds a Law degree from Rishon LeZion College, having completed the course in 2005. He also graduated in Civil Engineering and Management from Ben-Gurion University in 1998. He has knowledge of Hebrew, Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic.

Role as ambassador

Yossi Shelley started his diplomatic career in 2017, [6] his first position in the career. He was chosen by the Israeli government with the mission of expanding the dialogue between the two nations. Since then, the ambassador has dedicated efforts to strengthen relations between Brazil and Israel,[7] mainly through proposals for trade and services agreements. Important economic and technological cooperation agreements have been signed, and many other projects are underway. In visits to different states and regions of Brazil, Yossi Shelley discussed possibilities to expand partnerships in the sectors of water, agriculture, public security, health, energy generation, technology and education. One of its main partnerships is the cooperation with states in the Northeast to transfer Israeli desalination and irrigation technology as a way to combat drought in the region. The ambassador has a fundamental role in deepening partnerships between Brazil and Israel.[8] Due to its initiative and articulation, Israel has assisted Brazil in major disasters such as the collapse of the Brumadinho’s dam.[9] and large-scale fires in the Amazon [10] On May 2019, ambassador Yossi Shelley has received Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and other authorities at the embassy for the celebration of Israel's Independence Day, the Yom Haatzmaut.[11]. He also gave interviews to the main press organizations in Brazil, as well as regional publications
