Yeh Yi-chun (Chinese:葉怡均) is an artist in shuochang yishu ("speaking and singing art") and quyi ("melodious art") and the first female artist in pingshu. She was the apprentice of Chen Yi-an and Tien Lien-yuan. Yeh used to perform xiangsheng under the stage name “Chang Yi Chun” and has won the Variety Show Host Award at the 25th Golden Bell Awards. She is now the leader of Taipei Quyi Troupe and an adjunct associate professor at the Department of Chinese Drama, Chinese Culture University[1][2].

Introduction

Yeh Yi-chun developed the interest in playwriting and started writing scripts when studying at Ming Chuan University. [3]Yeh randomly watched a xiangsheng at a lecture and started writing scripts for xiangsheng since[4]. She filled in for a xiangsheng performer during an extracurricular event and started performing under the stage name “Chang Yi Chun.” In 1986, she officially became the apprentice of Chen Yi-an, the pioneering master of xiangsheng in Taiwan.[5][6] In 1988, Yeh and fellow artist in shuochang yishu Wang Chen-chuan were invited to Singapore and South Korea to carry out cultural exchange. [7]After returning to Taiwan, Yeh founded Wan Hsiang Art Troupe. Additionally, she was also a director-playwright for xiangsheng, lecturer in community colleges, radio program hostess, and event planner.[7]

In 2004, Yeh obtained her master’s degree of Art Studies at Fo Guang University and then joined Taipei Quyi Troupe, at which she oversaw organizing art camps and publications.[8] She was also one the performers of the troupe. In 2007, Yeh invited famous Chinese pingshu artist Tien Lien-yuan to perform in Taiwan. After the performance, Yeh decided to apprentice and learn pingshun Shenyang. Tien agreed to the apprenticeship, and thus Yeh became his first Taiwanese female apprentice and the first female pingshu artist in Taiwan.[5] Yeh took over Taipei Quyi Troupe as the leader in 2015 and publicly accepted apprenticeship at the Taipei Confucius Temple in 2016. Four apprentices,[5] Tuan Yen-his, Sung Ming-han, Chang Yen-ting, and Wu Yin-chieh were accepted. Guests in attendance included former Chairman of the National Culture and Arts Foundation and co-founder of Acer Group, Stan Shih, and former Minister of Culture Hung Meng-chi.[8]

Awards

In 1990, Yeh Yi-chun used her stage name "Chang Yi Chun" and her partner Wang Chen-chuan won the Variety Show Host Award at the 25th Golden Bell Awards. [9]
