Yaw-Chien Fang (Chinese: 方耀乾; Taiwanese: Iāu-khiân Png; Born December 18th, 1958) is a Taiwanese writer, poet and educator. He is a Distinguished Professor of National Taichung University of Education[1] in Taiwan. His expertise is Taiwanese Languages and Literatures, especially in written Hokkien and History of Taiwanese Literature. He is also one of the leading figures in promoting Taiwanese Languages and Literatures in Taiwan.

Biography

Yaw-Chien Fang was born in Tainan, Taiwan on December 18th, 1958. His grandfather Rung-Chin Fang(方榮欽), who practiced in traditional Chinese medicine and is also a traditional Chinese poet, has intensive knowledge of traditional Chinese poetry and Nanguan Music. His great interests in literature began under the influence of his grandfather. During secondary school, he spent a lot of time reading clippings and books his eldest brother bought, this further deepened his interest, and he made up his mind to study literature during this time. In 1991, he began his study and research in Taiwanese Language and Literature, and is actively committed to promoting and implementing Taiwanese Hokkien in education. He graduated from the Department of English language & Literature, Chinese Culture University, Taiwan (1984). He obtained his Master’s degree from Graduate Institute of English Language & Literature, Chinese Culture University, Taiwan (1987) and his PhD from Department of Taiwanese Literature, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan (2008).
