Yassamin Ansari is an American politician currently serving on the city council of Phoenix, Arizona and acting as the city's Vice Mayor.[1][2]

Early activities

Ansari attended Stanford University as an undergraduate and then received a master's degree from the University of Cambridge.[3] Ansari interned for Nancy Pelosi and worked as a senior policy advisor with UN Secretary Generals António Guterres and Ban Ki-moon.[1][3][4][5]

Political career

Ansari ran in a November 2020 election to fill the seat vacated by Michael Nowakowski, representing Phoenix's 7th District.[6] The top two of the five contenders in the general election, Ansari and Cinthia Estela, continued to a runoff election that took place on March 9, 2021.[5][6] Ansari took office as a council member in April 2021, becoming the youngest woman elected to the council.[7][8] While in office, she created an Office of Heat Response and Mitigation.[7] It has sought to plant trees, reduce pavement heat absorption, educate residents, and distribute resources including water.[9]

Ansari has been suggested as a potential contender for Arizona's 3rd congressional district.[10]

Awards and Honors

In 2019, Grist was selected for the Grist (magazine), an annual list of people taking environmental action.[4] In 2020, Ansari was selected for the Forbes 30 Under 30|Forbes 30 under 30: Policy and Law list.[3]
