Yashpal Singh Malik (born 14 October 1973) is an Indian virologist and the Dean, College of Animal Biotechnology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University[1] (GADVASU). Malik earlier served as ICAR-National Fellow at Indian Veterinary Research Institute[2] (ICAR-IVRI).

He has contributed in viral disease epidemiology, virus-host interactions, microbial biodiversity, characterization and diagnosis of animal pathogens. He has worked on coronaviruses, Japanese encephalitis virus, rotavirus and many other zoonotic viruses. Malik is serving the World Society for Virology[3] as Secretary and Indian Virological Society[4] as Secretary General. International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)[5] appointed Malik as member of the Birnaviridae and Picobirnaviridae study group in 2017.

Biography

Born 14 October 1973, Malik completed his bachelor’s degree in Veterinary and Animal Sciences from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University in 1995 and post-graduate studies in the field of Virology in 1997 and PhD in 2000. He joined the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) as National Fellow from 2014-2020 and then Dean, College of Animal Biotechnology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).[6]

Malik did his postdoctoral research in Molecular Virology at University of Minnesota, Saint Paul, USA (2001-2002). He acquired advanced training in Molecular Virology from University of Minnesota, Saint Paul, USA (2005), Division of Virology, Ontario Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (2013), and Wuhan Institute of Virology, China (2019).

Malik has two National patents to his credit. He has authored several reference books of reputed publishers including ICAR, Elsevier, and Springer Nature.[7] He has published a number of scientific research articles.[8] Malik has supervised a dozen of Ph.D. and Master’s degree students for their thesis research. Malik has been the Associate Editor of Frontiers in Microbiology and Frontiers in Veterinary Sciences. He has edited special issues of Springer’s journal VirusDisease on “Enteric Viral infections in Humans and Animals”, “Therapeutic Advances and their Biomedical Perspectives” a special issue for Journal of Current Drug Metabolism, and in the event of COVID, Malik compiled a special issue “Special Focus on SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19: advances in developing vaccines and immunotherapeutics” for “Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics” Journal 2020: Vol 16(12). Prof Malik has published a research topic on "Emerging Zoonoses and Transboundary Infections" for Frontiers in Veterinary Sciences and now contributing a research topic on "Coronaviruses from the One Health Perspective" for Frontiers in Microbiology.
