Yao Chen (姚琛}}, Ivan Yao, 야오천; March 23, 1998) born in Chongqing, China, is a Chinese male artist, singer, lyricist, composer, DJ, and dancer. He was a member of the Chinese Boygroup group R1SE. He was a trainee under JYP Entertainment in South Korea and is now an artist under Fanling Culture, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JYP Entertainment. On June 28, 2021, he officially debuted as a solo singer.

In 2019, he participated in the Tencent Video Idol Boy Group competition and development talent show "Produce Camp 2019".[1]; he later won 5th place in the program finals and debuted as a member of the limited-time group R1SE, serving as a sub-singer, rapper, and lead dancer for a two-year[2]

Early Life

Pre-debut: JYP Entertainment trainee

Yao Chen was born in Chongqing, China. He passed JYP Entertainment audition private draft in ETM. He started his training days count in JYP Entertainment on December 7th, 2015.[4][5]

He loves rapping and dancing. He discovered these talents when he first became an idol trainee in South Korea, and practiced diligently every day to continuously strengthen and consolidate the talents. Because of the company's strict management methods, Yao Chen has not had the opportunity to make public appearances in the past first three years of training. He has practiced in JYP Entertainment for 1021 days and participated in four trainee showcases. This training career has also accumulated a solid foundation for him to grow as an artist.

2019 - 2020 : Produce Camp 2019 & Debut with R1SE

Produce Camp 2019|R1SE In 2019, Yao Chen went to China to participated in Tencent Video's survival show program Produce Camp 2019. He was revealed to be a contestant of the show during the program's theme song "Say My Name". In the first competition, Yao Chen got selected as opponent by Zhou Zhennan and he became the center of Group B Wukong[5]. On May 22, he participated in the "Doki Ladder" meeting held at Chengyang Stadium with the other Produce Camp 2019 contestants. On June 2, he participated in Hunan Satellite TV's talk show "Tian Tian Shang Shang". During the recording of Produce Camp 2019, Yao Chen also participated in the shooting of multiple posters for fashion magazines such as "Vogue Me". On June 8, he placed 5th in the final show of Produce Camp 2019 and successfully debuted with R1SE on June 8, 2019 with the debut song "R.1.S.E".[6], which was also used in the movie "Men in Black: Global Manhunt" theme promotion song for China

On December 15, 2020, Yao Chen released the first solo single "NEVERMIND" as a predebut song.[7]

2021: R1SE disband & Solo Debut & 1st and 2nd EP

R1SE officially disbanded on June 14, 2021, after two years of active promotion and Yao Chen starts his personal activities at the same time.

On June 28, 2021, he officially made his solo debut with the first EP No Answer (Yao Chen album)|zh|不必回答}}. The EP includes 2 songs, "No Answer" and "Mobius".[8] The title track, "No Answer" hit 10.3236 million hits on QQ Music in seconds after its release, achieving Screaming Diamond Single Certification, with real-time hits of 15 million, making it the first peak diamond single in 2021. At the same time, "No Answer" parachuted into the QQ music popularity list and ranked first in the three charts, ranking first in the daily list on June 28, 2021, first in the 27th weekly list in 2021, and first in the real-time annual list in 2021. Show great popularity. In addition, "Mobius" was parachuted into the list of your music chart, and the title song "No Answer" was parachuted to the TOP1.[9][10]

On July 10, following the pre-debut single "NEVERMIND", "No Answer" also reached 20 million hits on QQ Music, becoming a Popularity Hall single. At the same time, Yao Chen is also the first singer to achieve the Peak Popularity Hall single certification on QQ Music in 2021. He is also the second singer on QQ Music to have two singles certified as one of the most popular singles on the Peak Chart after two years.

On August 8, he participated in the variety show "The Masked Dancer Season 2" on Jiangsu TV and "Lightning Cafe" on Shanghai TV.

On August 14, he participated in the "Time Echo Music Project" jointly produced by Tencent Music Entertainment Group and Weibo and sang a cover of F.I.R's "Our Love".

On December 26, Yao Chen released his second EP Album titled ！：EM. This second EP includes 3 songs, "Nevermind", "Yeah, Now", and "XXX".[11] Then, four days later he also released a Future Bounce based EDM single called "Lithops".[12]

December 2023 : Korean Music Show Debut

On December 2023, Yao Chen had his first appearance on a Korean music show, signaling his global market expansion. He appeared on KBS 2TV's 'Music Bank' on December 1, followed by MBC's 'Show! Music Core' and SBS's 'Inkigayo' on the 2nd and 3rd respectively. On these broadcasts he performed the English version of "Adventure Player", the title song of the album released on November 20.
