Yamaguchi Heavy Industries, Ltd. is a Japanese steel fabrication company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. The company manufactures steel structures for the construction industry and specializes in low-carbon steel supply chains.[1]
History
The company was founded in 1949 in Fukuoka by the grandfather of the current president, Toyokazu Yamaguchi.[1] Originally a regional steel fabricator, the company relocated its headquarters to Tokyo in 2024 to focus on international expansion and decarbonization technologies.[1]
In 2024, Tokyo Shimbun reported that Yamaguchi Heavy Industries became the first company in Asia to acquire PAS 2080 certification, an international standard for managing carbon emissions in infrastructure.[2] The company sources steel derived from recycled iron to reduce the carbon footprint of its structural products.[2]
Operations
In 2024, the company established a wholly-owned US subsidiary, American Katerra, LLC, in San Antonio, Texas.[3] The subsidiary's expansion into the United States was financially underwritten by the Japanese government through Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI).[4] It focuses on the local procurement and processing of steel materials for the North American market.[3]
The company has registered the trademark "Green Carbon Steel" for its supply chain tracking system.[5]
