Yakubu Dati (born 22 May 1962) is a Nigerian politician who recently served as commissioner for lands, survey and town planning in Nigeria's north central Plateau State.[1] [2]

A member of the All Progressives Congress, Dati held the position of commissioner of lands, survey & town planning in Plateau State from 2019 to 2023.[3][4] Prior to this, he served as commissioner for information and communications from 2018 to 2019.[5][6] Notably, he also served as commissioner for information and strategy from 2005 to 2007,[7] and as commissioner for youth and sports from 2003 to 2005.[8]

Dati's experience in the Nigerian government includes a role as a spokesperson[9] for the Airports Authority within the federal government. From 2012 to 2015, he oversaw communications strategies for all agencies under the Ministry of Aviation. Additionally, from 2010 to 2012, he served as a special assistant on media and political affairs to the minister of state for commerce and industry.

He served as Executive Chairman of Mikang Local Government Council [10]in Plateau State from 1999 to 2002 before his appointment as special assistant to the state governor on strategic planning from 2002 to 2003.

Dati is a strong advocate for democratic dialogue and stakeholder engagement, who has played pivotal roles in shaping policies and fostering effective communication within the Nigerian political landscape.[11]

Early life and career

Dati was born in Tunkus, Plateau State, a state located in Nigeria’s north-central and regarded at the twelfth-largest state. He was born to a devout Christian parents and community leaders. He had his primary, secondary, and tertiary education in the historic city of Jos, where he earned a Bachelor degree in Theater Arts from the University of Jos in 1986. He later earned a master’s degree in international law and diplomacy. Yakubu holds a diploma in Airport Operations. Turning to elective politics, he was elected as executive chairman, Mikang Local Government Council in Plateau State from 1999 to 2002, after he ran for office.

Dati also attended leadership courses on managing and leading strategic change by attendances at various summits and college classrooms.

Professional Accomplishments

With an academic background in International Law and Diplomacy, Dati has helped in policy drafting process and developed innovative solutions that addressed the needs of diverse stakeholders. During his tenure as a commissioner for land, survey and town planning, Dati introduced policies that protected landowners from losing their lands. He also automated Plateau Land Administration and Geographically Information System (PLAGIS), which curbed revenue losses to the government.[12]

He has utilized traditional and digital platforms to disseminate information for public engagement on government issues. He superintended communications strategies to deal with complex challenges, including during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2013[13][14] and perennial crises associated with the Nigerian aviation sector, when he served as a spokesperson[15][16] for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and while serving as commissioner for information and strategy in Plateau State during Boko Haram insurgency and violent clashes between farmers and herders.[17][18]

In his most recent efforts to ensure his political party, the All Progressives Congress wins the presidential elections, he played a pivotal role as a chief of staff [19][20]to the Director General of the All Peoples Congress Presidential Campaign, former Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong.
