Japanese online business Yahoo! Japan Corporation was established as a joint venture between the American internet corporation Yahoo! (which was subsequently sold by Verizon into Altaba) and the Japanese company SoftBank. Its headquarters are located in Kioicho, Chiyoda, Tokyo, in the Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho complex, which is part of the Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho complex. Yahoo! Japan's online gateway is the most frequented website in the country, and the company's internet services are the most widely used in the nation. According to The Japan Times, Yahoo Japan has established a presence in the Japanese internet industry as of the year 2012. However, when it comes to popularity as a search engine, it has never overtaken Google. As of July 2021, the business is the second most popular search engine in Japan, with a market share of 19 percent, behind only Google, which has a 77 percent share.

Yahoo! and SoftBank established Yahoo! Japan in January 1996 with the goal of establishing Japan's first online portal as a result of the World Wide Web. Yahoo! Japan started online on April 1, 1996, and has been ever since. In November 1997, Yahoo! Japan was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (JASDAQ). In January 2000, it became the first stock in Japanese history to trade for more than 100 million per share, making it the most valuable stock in the world. When the business was first publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in October 2003, it became a constituent of the Nikkei 225 stock market index the following year.
