Family doctors and general practitioners from every part of the globe are represented by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), which is a worldwide professional organisation that does not seek to profit from its activities. The goal of the Globe Organization of Nurses and Midwives in Family Medicine (WONCA) is to improve the quality of life of people all over the world by promoting high standards of care in general practise and family medicine.

In formal ties with the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization of Family Doctors and Clinicians (WONCA) is a non-governmental organisation that represents family doctors and the practise of family medicine.

Since its inception in 1972, the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) has grown to include more than 130 Member Organizations, which together represent around 600,000 family physicians working in approximately 150 nations and territories throughout the globe. WONCA is divided into seven areas, each of which has a Regional President and Regional Council. These regions include Africa, Asia Pacific, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, Iberoamericana-CIMF, North America, and South Asia. WONCA provides financial assistance to a variety of organisations, including Working Parties, Special Interest Groups, and Young Doctors Movements. These entities collaborate in order to make strides in certain domains that WONCA and its members all around the world find of interest. The activities of the organisations are participated in by hundreds of general practitioners. They have generated a large number of significant papers in addition to carrying out ground-breaking research and studies during the course of their careers. At the moment, there are eleven Working Parties, some of which are named Education, Research, Quality Care, and Classification. Young Doctors Movements are known as "Vasco da Gama" in Europe, "Rajakumar" in Asia Pacific, "Spice Route" in South Asia, "Waynakay" in Iberoamericana, "AfriWON" in Africa, "Polaris" in North America, and "Al Razi" in the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, "Al Razi" can be found in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The World Organization of National Colleges, Academies, and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians is where the acronym WONCA comes from. It is comprised of the first five letters of each of those organisations.

Donald Li, who hails from Hong Kong, is the person in charge of WONCA at the moment. Anna Stavdal was the victorious candidate in the election for president in 2018, and she will take office in 2021.
