World News is a British alternative rock band formed in 2018 in Brighton.[1] Today they are a London-based quartet. The group consists of Alex Evans (lead vocals, lead guitar), Rory Evans (bass guitar), Malte Henning (drums), and Jack Tollman (rhythm guitar).[2] They gained recognition after being named in Stereogum's “40 Best New Artists of 2024”[3] and The Fader's “13 Artists We’re Excited About in 2025.” [4][5]

History

World News was formed by brothers Alex and Rory Evans, who began writing and performing in Brighton before relocating to London.[6] Drummer Malte Henning and rhythm guitarist Jack Tollman later joined, finalizing the lineup.[7]

World News released their debut EP, Job and Money, in 2020.[8] This was followed by Flag With No Pole, in 2023[9] and two EP's in 2024: Escape[10] and Mindsnap.[11]

Musical Style and Influences

World News' music has been described as blending post-punk and new wave influences with elements of indie rock.[12] Earmilk highlighted their single "Don’t Want To Know," noting its "delayed, hook-driven guitar line" and vocals that evoke late-1970s and early-1980s post-punk and new wave, comparing their sound to "the moody introspection of The Smiths" and the "edge of The Clash."[12] The Line of Best Fit noted the band for its "cascading guitar lines."[13] Stereogum described their singles "Back To Hong Kong" and "Red" as "jangly jams that recall the halcyon days of college rock," stating that the tracks from their Escape EP (2024) "sustain an expansive mood," and compared their style to contemporary indie rock groups such as Real Estate and Parquet Courts.[14]
