WordPress (also known as WordPress.org) is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) developed in PHP and designed to work with either a MySQL or MariaDB database as a backend. WordPress has a number of features, including a plugin architecture and a template system, which are referred to as Themes. Since its inception, WordPress has grown to handle a wide range of web content types, including more conventional mailing lists and forums, as well as media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems (LMS), and online marketplaces. WordPress, one of the most widely used content management systems in the world, is utilised by 42.8 percent of the top 10 million websites, according to statistics from October 2021.

WordPress was published on May 27, 2003, as a fork of the b2/cafelog programming language by its creators, American developer Matt Mullenweg and English developer Mike Little. The GNU General Public License version 2 (or later) is used to distribute the programme.

WordPress must be installed on a web server, which may be either a component of an Internet hosting service such as WordPress.com or a computer running the software package WordPress.org in order to act as a network host in its own right. A local computer may be used for single-user testing and learning purposes, as well as for other applications.
